Roman Coins - Denarius of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Silver AR3
Silver denarius of Emperor Marcus Aurelius coined in 175 AD. On obverse side there is the emperor laureate head with around the words: MANTONINVS AVG  GERMSARM (Marcus Antoninus Augustus Germanicus Sarmaticus). On reverse side  a sitted figure symbolizing the Security holding a scepter, with around the letters: SECVRITPVBTRPXXIX and below: IMPVIII/COSIII (mint year 175 / Consul in 161) * Marcus Annius Catilus Severus known then with the name of Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome in 26th April of 121 AD. His reign was part of the golden age of the Roman Empire, and was dedicated to the strengthening of defences and borders. Marcus Aurelius reign began in 161, year of the death of Antoninus Pius and continued till year180, this 19 years of reign was passed in a continous series of military campaigns, also if the Emperor nature was addressed toward humanities and philosophy. Two was the main military campaignes, the one toward Parthians, on the oriental border of Empire, and the other toward Germans that was arrived to invade the the North-West region of Italy. The Oriental campaign ended with the defeath of  Parthians in 163 AD and the reconquest of  all the Armenia and the Mesopotamia. In 167 barbarian peoples of Quades and Marcomannes began the invasion of the danubian border. The invasors broke throught the danubian border and reched the actual Venetian region, putting over siege the town of Aquileia. The Marcus Aurelius reply was immediate, and also if his Legions was persecuted by the pestilence, He had success to block the barbarians and then repel them other the Danube. The campaign ended in 175, but Emperor passed the remaining five years of his reign to fortify and reinforce the Danubian region. Marcus Aureliu died in Vindobona (Vienna) in 180 DC, leaving the Empire in the hands of his son Commodus, that was  his assistant since many years and Consul of Empire.
