Heathkit HW-101 Heath Co. - Benton Harbor, MI - U.S.A. - 1970. The HW-101 is a transceiver designed specifically for amateur radio, manufactured and sold in kit form by Heathkit from 1970 to 1983. Numerous HW-101s were sold in the U.S. and many other parts of the world, and after assembly and calibration, the device enabled amateur radio operators to successfully operate in SSB (single sideband) and CW (telegraphy) modes on the amateur frequency bands from 80 to 10 meters. The technical specifications are: sensitivity less than 0.3 microvolts for a 10 dB signal in SSB, selectivity 2.1 kHz minimum at 6 dB. Audio output 2W. The transmitter has an RF power output of 100 W from 80 to 15 meters and 80 W on 10 meters, with an antenna impedance of 50 Ohms. The tuning accuracy is 5 kHz/division, with a 100 kHz crystal. 19 tubes are used: OA2, (2x) 6HS6, (4x) 6AU6, (1x) 6BN8, (1x) 6CB6, (4x) 6EA8, (1) 6GW8, (2x) 12AT7, (1) 12AU7, (1x in the driver) 6CL6, (2x in the RF final stage) 6146. Two transistors are also used in the VFO: an MPF-105 FET-VFO and a 2N3393 as VFO voltage regulator. The HW-101's cabinet is metal with perforated panels for good ventilation. Its dimensions are 15 x 6.25 x 13.5 inches, and it weighs 22.026 lb. The transceiver requires an external SB-600 speaker (a 9-inch diameter, 8-watt impedance magnetodynamic speaker). In my case, the cabinet also houses the chassis of the HP-23B power supply, which draws power from 220 VAC and supplies the transceiver with the voltages required for operation: 700 VDC 250 mA, 300 VDC 150 mA, 115 VDC 10 mA, and 12 V at 4.76 A. The SB-600, with the HP-23B power supply inserted, weighs 20.815 lb and measures 10 x 6.75 x 11 inches. I used this device, which I received used and inoperative, for a period in the late 1980s. To restore its functionality, I had to replace the two worn-out power tubes with a pair of new RCA 6146s, purchased at high price at the Ham show in Mantua. After neutralizing the tubes as explained in the HW-101 assembly manual (pages 122-123 and 140-141) and thoroughly cleaning the relays RL1 and RL2 contacts with spray, I received excellent results operating on 40 and 20 meters. © IKI3HIA, 2005 - 2025

Heathkit HW-101 Heath Co. - Benton Harbor, (MI) - U.S.A. - 1970. L'HW-101 è un ricetrasmettitore studiato appositamente per i per radioamatori che fu prodotto e venduto in kit dalla Heathkit dal 1970 al 1983. Di HW-101 ne furono venduti moltissimi esemplari negli USA e in molte altre parti del mondo, e dopo l'assemblaggio e la taratura l'apparato ai radioamatori di operarecon successo in modalità SSB (singola banda laterale) e CW (telegrafia) nelle bande di frequenze amatoriali dagli 80 ai 10 metri. Le specifiche tecniche sono: sensibilità minore di 0,3 microvolt per un segnale di 10 dB in SSB, selettività 2,1 KHz minima a 6 dB. Uscita audio 2W. Il trasmettitore ha un'uscita di potenza in RF di 100 W da 80 a 15 metri e di 80 W sui 10 metri, l'impedenza d'antenna è di 50 Ohm. La precisione della sintonia è di 5 kHz/divisione, con quarzo a 100 KHz. Valvole impiegate 19: OA2, (2x) 6HS6, (4x) 6AU6, (1x) 6BN8, (1x) 6CB6, (4x) 6EA8, (1) 6GW8, (2x) 12AT7, (1) 12AU7, (1x nel driver) 6CL6, (2x nello stadio finale RF) 6146. Nel VFO inoltre vengono utilizzati 2 transistor: un MPF-105 Fet-VFO e un 2N3393 come regolatore di tensione. Il cabinet dell'HW-101 è metallico con pannelli forati che permettono una buona ventilazione, e le dimensioni sono: 38 x 16 x 34,3 cm / 15 x 6.25 x 13.5 inch, mentre il peso è di 10 kg / 22.026 lb. Per il funzionamento del ricetrasmettitore è necessario l'altoparlante esterno SB-600 (un altoparlante magnetodinamico con diametro 22,9 cm e 8 W di impedenza), nel cui cabinet nel mio caso è stato inserito anche lo chassis dell'alimentatore tipo HP-23B che viene alimentato da 220 Vac e fornisce all'RTX le tension necessarie per il funzionamento: 700 Vdc 250 mA, 300 Vdc 150 mA, 115 Vdc 10 mA e 12 V con 4,76 A. L'SB-600 con l'alimentatore HP-23B inserito pesa 9,45 Kg e le dimensioni sono: 25 x 17 x 28 cm. Ho utilizzato questo apparato, che ho ricevuto usato e non funzionante, per un certo periodo a fine anni '80. Per ripristinarne il funzionamento ho dovuto sostituire le due valvole di potenza che erano esaurite con una coppia di 6146 nuove della RCA acquistate a caro prezzo alla fiera Ham di Mantova, e dopo aver eseguita la neutralizzazione delle valvole come spiegato nel manuale di assemblaggio HW-101 (pag 122/123 e 140/141) e aver pulito bene con lo spray i contatti dei relè RL1 e RL2 ho ricevuto ottimi controlli operando sui 40 e sui 20 metri. © IKI3HIA, 2005 - 2025
