This is my little collection of Zenith Radio Corporation receivers; I think that they are very interesting especially the Transoceanic series, with nice sensitivity and round sound. They are agreeable to use and to listen also if is passed a lot of years since their construction.

Zenith Radio Corporation short history

The company began his activity in Chicago, Illinois in 1918 with a little production of radio amateur equipments. The name "Zenith" came from his founder call sign 9ZN. The company was formally incorporated as Zenith Radio in 1923. Zenith introduced right away several domestic and also portable radio models (1924), which were his production core. The famous portable series named "Transoceanic" was introduced in the 1938. Since the 30's Zenith began his experience in TV technology, with first broadcasting TV transmission in 1939; the first black & white TV starting line was marketed in since 1948. In 1955 was patented by Zenith the first wireless TV remote control, later the company got specialization in flat screen TV and in the high definition technology "HDTV".

Since 1979 Zenith began to feel the effects of the foreign competition, especially from Japanese companies, and came in state of crisis. Was decided to enter in the computer business, so was bought the Heathkit control. At that time Heathkit was producing the H-8 computer in kit. The Heathkit computer division name was changed in "Zenith Data System", and began the production of desk top and portable personal computers. The company name became "Zenith Electronics Corporation" since 1984, to reflect the transaction from the Radio to the Computers and CATV production. In 1989 the Zenith Data System division was sold to Bull French Group to get capital to dedicate to the High definition and cable TV development.

Since 1990 the crisis situation grew, so Zenith Electronics Co. was forced to sell 5% of itself to the LG Electronics Group (Seoul, South Korea). But during 90's end Zenith went in definitive bankrupt and in 1999, in front to the debits reparation, LG got all the old Company shareholding control.

Why I am so interested to the Zenith Company story? Old Radio and kits (Heathkit) apart: I worked about 30 years for the Honeywell - Bull Group, so from the 80's end my activity was concerned also to the Zenith Data System products.

Questa e' la mia piccola collezione di ricevitori della Zenith Radio Corporation, li trovo molto interessanti specialmente la serie Transoceanic, con buona sensibilita' e una rotonda riproduzione sonora. Essi sono piacevoli da usare e ascoltare anche se sono trascorsi ormai molti anni dalla loro costruzione.

Breve storia della Zenith Radio Company.

La Societa' inizio'ad operare a Chicago, Illinois nel 1918 con una piccola produzione di apparecchiature per radioamatori. Il nome Zenith derivo' dal nominativo da radioamatore del suo fondatore 9ZN. La Societa' fu registrata formalmente come Zenith Radio nel 1923. Zenith presento' subito molti modelli di radio domestiche e portatili (1924) di cui fu grande produttore, e della famosa serie "Transoceanic" che inizio' ad introdurre nel mercato sin dal 1938. Dagli anni 30 inizio' la sua esperienza nella tecnologia TV, con le prime trasmissioni TV commerciali nel 1939, la prima linea di apparecchi TV in bianco e nero fu commercializzata nel 1948. Brevetto' il telecomando TV senza fili nel 1955, si specializzo' nella FM multiplex stereo (1961), e successivamente nelle TV a schermo piatto e nell'alta definizione "HDTV".

Dal 1979 Zenith comincio' a risentire della concorrenza di ditte straniere, specialmente giapponesi, ed entro' in crisi, cosi' decise di entrare nel mondo dei Computer ed acquisto' il controllo dell'americana Heathkit che a quel tempo produceva in kit il computer H-8. Zenith cambio' il nome della divisione computer delle Heathkit in "Zenith Data System", producendo vari modelli di computers da tavolo e portatili. Il nome della societa' cambio' in "Zenith Electronics Corporation" sin dal 1984 per rispecchiare il passaggio della produzione dalla Radio ai Computers e alla CATV. Nel 1989 la divisione "Zenith Data System" fu venduta al gruppo francese Bull per rimediare capitali da investire nella ricerca sulla TV ad alta definizione e via cavo.

Dal 1990 lo stato di crisi si e' ulteriormente acuito, cosi' la Zenith Electronics e' stata costretta a vendere il 5% di se stessa al gruppo LG Electronics di Seul, Sud Corea. Ma successivamente Zenith entro' definitivamente in bancarotta e nel 1999, in cambio della riparazione dei debiti, LG acquisi' il restante pacchetto azionario della vecchia azienda.

Perche' sono interessato alla storia della Zenith Company? Perche' Radio e kit (Heathkit) a parte, ho lavorato per circa 30 anni per il gruppo Honeywell - Bull, cosi' dalla fine degli anni 80 la mia attivita' interessava anche i prodotti della Zenith Data System.
